Optimizing Your Site for Search Engines

  • Overview

Search engine optimization is an ever-changing process. What works one month may not work the next. That is why Datahost provides a variety of ways to optimize your website using your Site Manager.

From the ground up, we build websites with search engine strategies in mind. Many shopping cart sites can't be indexed by the search engines because the search engines won't process URL's with certain symbols in them. We integrate features right into our designs that will allow all of the pages in your website to be indexed - even your shopping cart product pages.

Getting your site found in the search engines is a task that takes time, effort, and ingenuity. We would be happy to discuss with you the options we offer for search engine optimization (SEO). There are many simple and common sense steps you can take to help improve your site's visibility.

Google and other search engines give more weight to sites listed in a directory called DMOZ and listings in DMOZ are free! Take a few moments to submit your web site now. Here is the link with detailed instructions to submit your website to the DMOZ directory. dmoz.org/add.html

  • Meta Description and Meta Keywords

Each page on your web site contains hidden "meta descriptions" and "meta keywords" that the search engines use to index your pages. Our system provides you with the tools that let you control what keywords and descriptions appear. These features are very important since 85% of all visitors come from the search engines.

To edit your default Meta Description and Meta Keywords:

      1. Click on the "settings" administrative link.

      2. Edit the Meta Description field. This should be a short, descriptive, keyword-filled paragraph about your business.

      3. Edit the Meta Keywords field. This is a list of keywords associated with your business that visitors might search for.

Note: Product pages will use the product keywords and product description for the meta keywords and meta description, respectively.

  • Browser Title and Page Keywords

One of the ways some search engines evaluate your site's pages is to look at the browser's page title to see if it matches the content on the page. We have set up your site so the browser title matches keywords present on a page.

    To set-up browser title/keywords:

    • Click the "settings" administrative link, then edit the "Default Keywords Phrases". You'll want to enter two to three keyword-filled phrases. For example: shopping cart websites - ecommerce solutions for online businesses. The default phrases will be used on all non-product pages when nothing else is specified.
    • Enter a keyword-filled phrase in the "Category Keyword" field for all categories and name your categories with searches in mind. Category list and product list pages on your site will use the category name and category keyword phrase as the browser title and keywords.
    • Enter a keyword-filled phrase in the "Keyword" field for all product pages and name products with searches in mind. Product pages use the product name and product keywords for the browser title and keywords.

Some criteria to keep in mind when creating keyword phrases:
    • Variety is the spice of life. Don't use the same keyword phrase for every product in a category. Ideally, you want unique keyword phrases on each page of your site.
    • For category keywords, push your most competitive phrases by themselves. For product keywords, think phrases rather than generic words. For example, "natural treatments for diaper rash" is better than just "diaper rash."
    • Limit the number of words in your search phrases. Try to keep the combined total to eight or less.
    • Use both single and plural forms of a word in your phrases. For example, "natural treatments for diaper rash" and "organic treatment for diaper rash."
    • Use keyword phrases in your product names and in the text on the page.

  • Search-Friendly Page Names

From the ground up, we will build your site with search engine strategies in mind. • Using the "Optimize" Link for Rapid Optimization

MightyMerchant has built-in features that help make your web pages "search engine friendly". Search engine friendly pages are accessible to search engines and are designed to come up high in search engine results for targeted keywords.

MightyMerchant sets default values and allows you to fine-tune the following areas on each of your web pages:

    Page Title
This text appears in the title bar of the browser window. Search engines weigh this text heavily. By default, MightyMerchant uses the Category Name or a combination of the Category Name and the Product/Page Name of the page that is set in the site manager.

    Page Heading
This text appears near the top of each page and by default is the Category Name or the Product/Page Name that is set in the site manager.

    Description
This text is found in the body of each page and by default is used as the "meta description". This text is set in the site manager for each category and item. For search engines, your descriptive text should include keywords. The meta description is used by some search engines (Google) as the first few lines of text that is displayed in the search results.

    Meta Description
The meta description is used by some search engines (Google) as the first few lines of text that is displayed in the search results. By default MightyMerchant uses your category and item descriptions, but you may override the default setting using the "Optimize" Feature.

    Web Page URL
This is the web address of each page on your web site. Some search engines give more weight to pages that have keywords in the web page address. By default, MightyMerchant uses web addresses that include "category_name.html" or "product_name.html" where "category_name" and "product_name" are the actual category and product/page names in your site manager. You can use the "Optimize" feature to change the web page addresses.

    Keywords
Depending on your web site design, keywords will used for "meta keywords" which are not visible on the page, but are visible to search engines, or keywords may visible in the body of your web pages, and will be seen by both search engines and web site visitors. You can use the "Optimize" feature to set keywords for each page.

To use the Optimize Feature, navigate to the area of your web site that you want to optimize for search engines and click the "Optimize" link.

Your screen will change so you can fine-tune the SEO elements on each of your pages

Change and fine-tune the elements as needed and click the "Save Changes" button.

If you have a large catalog, you may find it even easier to download your data into a spreadsheet, fine-tune your SEO elements and then re-upload. At the bottom of each "Optimize" page, use these buttons to make bulk changes in a spreadsheet:

    Download These
Prompts you to download a file that has the SEO fields in CSV format so that they can be edited in a spreadsheet and re-uploaded. Downloads the current list that is shown on the page. If there are mutliple pages in the current list, all pages are downloaded.

Tip: If you search for a keyword before clicking 'Download These', items matching your search will be downloaded. Use this feature to Optimize related items no matter how your web site is organized!

    Download All
Downloads all categories or products/items on the site, depending on what you are currently displaying.

    Browse and Upload
Upload a CSV file that you have previously downloaded and edited.

    Important Notes:

    • The first line in the spreadsheet is expected to be a header identifying the columns for the user and is ignored.
    • You cannot add or delete columns or the upload will fail.
    • If you rearrange columns, you'll completely screw up the web site.
    • The "reserved" fields should not be tinkered with.
    • If you sort the data in the spreadsheet, you must sort ALL columns or you will completely screw up the web site.
    • We recommend saving the original downloaded file as is and working on a copy. If you then make a mistake and wreak havoc on the site you can re-upload the original file that was downloaded and be back where you started.
    • We recommend starting with a small sample. Download one category with a few items, optimize those and re-upload. Verify that you got the results you expected. As you gain confidence, work with larger selections.
    • The "back to site manager" link takes you back to the last page you were viewing.
    • The "upload" button behaves the same no matter where you are when you click it. You do not have to be on a particular page before uploading a file.
