Creating Text Links in Your Site Manager

  • Determining the URL of a Web Page

Creating links to other pages on your website (internal links) or to other websites (external links) are easy to create once you determine the URL (the web "address") of the page you want to link to, and by following a few basic steps.

    URLs for Internal Links

To determine the URL for an internal page:

Go to the page you want to link to and look at the URL shown in the browser. Each URL will contain "home" followed by a 3- or 4-letter code we refer to as your store id.

      1. If the page contains "home/store id/" in the URL, you only need the part of the URL after "home/store id/".

      Example
      The page URL is
      "http://somesite.com/home/ss1/smartlist_8/flowers.html"
       or
      "http://somesite.com/home/ss1_123456/smartlist_8/flowers.html"
The part of the URL to use is: "smartlist_8/flowers.html."

      2. If the page URL does not contain "home/store id/" then you need the
      entire URL for your link.

      Example
      The page URL is "http://somesite.com/filename.html"

Use the entire URL (http://somesite.com/filename.html) for the link.

    URLs for External Links

To determine the URL for an external page:
    • Go to the page you want to link to and copy the URL from the location bar of your browser.

  • Creating Links in the Site Manager

    Adding URLs in Link Fields

      1. Certain sections of your Site Manager, such as the Announcements category, have designated "Link" fields. Place the URL in the Link field.

Note: if the link goes to another website and you would like the site to open in a new browser window, follow the link with "target=_blank."

      Example:
      http://somesite.com target=_blank

    Adding links in Text Fields

Once you've determined the URL of the page you want to link to, follow this formula for inserting the link within your text:
    <html><a href=URL>Name of Site or Linked Page</a></html>

    Examples:
    <html><a href=http://somesite.com/index.html target=_blank>Some Site</a></html>
    or
    <html><a href=smartlist_8/flowers.html>Flowers</a></html>

    Showing an Actual URL:
If you want to show an actual URL address in the text, just type the entire URL. The URL will automatically become a link in the text.

Adding links with the WYSIWYG Editor

    1. Make a list of all the pages you want to link to.

You will need to enter the entire URL for your links, even if they are going to a page on your website.

    2. Open the Edit Item screen for the article that you want to add text.

    3. Click "Edit Above Text with HTML editor"

    4. Drag across the text you want to use for the link.

    5. Click the link icon at the top of the screen (it looks like a little globe with a chain in front of it.)

    6. Paste in the link address. If the link goes to a page on your website, you can leave the rest blank. If the link goes to another website, set the Window to open in a new window. Then click OK.

    7. You can repeat for other links on the page. Then click the little disk icon in the top left corner of the wysiwyg editor.

    8. You need to do one final step of clicking "Save" for this article.

  • DON'T Put Session IDs in Your Links

    What is a Session ID?

When an item is added to the cart on your website, a session id is created. The session id is a long string of numbers that will appear in the url address of the website page. It identifies a specific shopping cart.

    Example

When you are creating a link, either in the Site Manager, or pasting to a newsletter or email, be sure not to include the session id because all people who click the link will share the same shopping cart. This can be especially bad if a search engine indexes the link.

What To Do if You Accidentally Send out a Link with the Session ID

Send an email webhelp@heroweb.com and provide the EXACT version of the link that contains the session id. We can intercept requests to that link and send them to a page that does not contain the session id.
