Using AVS and CVM
The Address Verification System (AVS) and Card Verification Methods (CVM) are two strategies businesses can employ to help protect against online credit card fraud.
AVS confirms that the address and zip code given by the customer matches the address and zip code associated with the credit card.
CVM involves a special 3 or 4 digit number that is printed on some credit cards but does not appear on receipts, statements or any other credit card documents. In a large number of credit card fraud cases, the actual card has not been stolen; only its number and expiration date have been copied down. Thus, a customer who can give a valid CVM number is more likely to be the rightful owner.
For more information about these methods, contact your merchant account provider.
